Homecard

The Homecard Library Program is a cooperative library system which has served Vermont library patrons since 1991. Patrons of the Worthen Library that have homecard privileges (residents of other town must use homecards from their own hometown library) may use their hometown library card to check out materials at participating libraries.

What is Homecard?
The Homecard Library System is a cooperative lending program of 30 libraries in northwestern Vermont. Patrons who sign up for Homecard can check out materials at any Homecard library in Vermont for free.
Can I return items I check out at another library to Worthen Library?

No, items must be returned to the library where they were checked out. If you return an item to the wrong library, your Worthen Library account will reflect the overdue items, which could lead to restrictions being placed on your account.

Will my Worthen Library card work at other libraries?
Once you have a Homecard sticker, your Worthen Library card will work at Homecard libraries that use the same online catalog system as Worthen Library (Koha). If a Homecard library doesn’t use Koha, you will be issued a special Homecard from that Library free of charge.<[/et_pb_accordion_item]
Will items I check out at another library show up on my Worthen Library Account?

If the library uses the Koha system, you will see items checked out from other libraries. If they don’t, you will not.

Can I check out non-traditional items or use digital resources from another Homecard library?

Each library in the system sets their own limits for what Homecard users can access. Usually you will not have access to digital resources, and limited access to new or special collections.

How do I see what’s available at other libraries?

You can search most Homecard libraries’ catalogs on their library websites to see what they have in their collection. You can also visit libraries in person and browse, or call the library.

Can I place a hold at another Homecard library?

Yes, but not with your online account. You may place a hold on an item at another Homecard library by calling them and asking to place a Homecard hold.

Can I renew items from another library online with my Worthen Library account?
If the library also uses Koha the item will show up on your Worthen Library account and can be renewed online. If you do not see the item in your online account, contact the library you borrowed that item from for renewals.
Will items I check out at another library count toward my item total at Worthen Library?
The lending library’s rules apply to each borrowed item. Note that policies like borrowing time and item limits may be different at other libraries.
Why do I want a Homecard?
  • You’re reading a series and the next book has a long waiting list at Worthen Library. Check the catalog at another Homecard library, and you might be able to get the book sooner!
  • Your child has a soccer league in Essex every Saturday. You can make a stop at the Essex Free Library part of your weekly routine, returning and checking out materials!
  • You’re on a family camping trip to Grand Isle State Park but you forgot to bring books! Stop by the Grand Isle Free Library on your way up and get reading supplies to keep you entertained by the campfire.

Interlibrary Loans

Interlibrary Loan Guidelines

Interlibrary loan services are for South Hero residents only, with current library cards.

  • Loans from other libraries typically take 1-2 weeks to receive but can sometimes take 2 to 4 weeks for hard to find or popular items.
  • There is a maximum of 3 active requests per patron at a time.
  • Patrons must be in “good standing” to request items through ILL (i.e. not restricted, no overdue items)
  • Materials must be in publication for at least 6 months before requesting from another library.
  • Patrons may request books, journal articles, DVDs, and audiobooks through ILL.
  • Renewal requests should be made 5 days before an ILL item is due; it is up to the owning library to grant a renewal for an item.
  • Lending libraries have their own loan periods/due dates. It may be possible to renew and it may not, and this will be up to the lending library also.
  • It is important that a patron pick up the item as soon as possible since their clock will be ticking. Three failures to pick up a book at all will result in a termination of ILL privileges for 6 months.

Interlibrary loan is made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Vermont State Library.

Please call or email us to place a request.
